Happy Birthday

Happy 139th Birthday to the Navy Medical Corps! That is all.

Equipment Noise is Accelerating Hearing Loss

…hearing loss “will continue to be a major disability associated with the operation of high-performance aircraft.”

In September 2007, a US Navy officer working with the Marines’ executive safety board issued a simple, stark warning. According to a presentation by CDR Stan Jossell, the Marines–and to some extent the services in general–are buying new equipment that is so loud that it’s not a matter of whether but when and how badly operators will suffer permanent hearing damage. Jossell noted, moreover, that the technology to protect users from damage does not yet exist.

Otoacoustic Emissions: Reducing and Preventing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

The biggest benefit that OAEs provide over audiograms is that changes in OAEs may be detected long before there are changes in hearing.

Tests are needed that enable audiologists to catch hearing loss before it becomes clinically significant and—better still—stop a hearing loss from ever occurring. An otoacoustic emission (OAE) test may be the solution.
